Why Ugandans abroad need real estate investments back home.

Like many Ugandans in the past, my cousin Samuel left the country in search of greener pastures abroad. Arriving in the UK with little to his name, he worked tirelessly. Braving cold nights on duty, the high cost of living, and the loneliness of living in a foreign land, he persevered. One goal motivated him: He wanted to save enough money to build a comfortable lifestyle eventually.

Samuel worked abroad for 20 years before he was finally ready to return home. In 2022, he mobilized all his savings to relocate back to Uganda to start a business. When he contacted me about his decision, I was worried.

Now, I’m familiar with the business landscape in Uganda. Like anywhere else, it can be challenging, and if one is not well prepared, it is easy to be financially ruined. I advised him to first invest in tangible assets like rental or commercial units that could assure him of a minimum monthly income, after which he would be free to risk and experiment with the business ideas. Unfortunately, he didn’t heed this advice. Within two years, he had lost everything and had to move back to the UK for life to make sense again.

Such scenarios are why Ugandans abroad need real estate investments back home. Investment decisions are crucial, as they can significantly impact your financial future. Whether seeking higher returns or a sense of security, you'll often weigh the pros and cons of different investment opportunities.
